Protecting and conserving our natural environment
We set out to fight hunger, poverty and climate change as a social enterprise called Sustainable Green Initiative in 2012. We started with planting fruit trees at community places and such in Kolkata. We planted a grand sum of 3000 trees in 2012.
Since then, we have grown and developed relationships across the country. In May 2018, a charitable trust was formed called SGI Foundation.
Our Mission
Empowering the most vulnerable communities by using indigenous methods and modern science to create nature based solutions to counter the effects of climate change.
Agroforestry
SGI Foundation invests in sustainable community development projects to create positive change through tree plantation with small and marginal farmers
Marine Ecosystem Restoration
Mangrove plantation restores marine ecosystems by stabilizing shorelines, enhancing biodiversity, and providing habitat for aquatic life.
Urban Planting & Land Restoration
Urban tree planting improves air quality, reduces heat, enhances aesthetics, and promotes overall community well-being. SGIF is proud to have carried out several of these projects
Waste Management
Effective waste management reduces pollution, and integrates respect for waste workers in its systems. SGIF has recycled more than 30 mt of plastic waste while creating sustainable livelihoods for waster workers
